Unsettling Times

There are many things happening in America right now that are pretty unsettling. Our national security and the economy are at risk and for many it’s a scary time.

In times like these we are reminded that we should never place our confidence and hope in riches or in the so-called “security” of this world. Now, more than ever, we need to “set our minds on things above where Christ is.” He is “seated at the right hand of God,” “interceding for us,” and “able to do far more abundantly beyond anything we can ask or imagine.” After all, what is our life? James reminded us that it is “a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes” (James 4:14) –a humbling thought.

The solution to our problems will never be found if we forget the One who has, in spite of our repeated attempts to shut Him out, blessed our nation. As our former President, Ronald Reagan, wisely stated:

Without God, there is no virtue, because there’s no prompting of the conscience. Without God, we’re mired in the material, that flat world that tells us only what the senses perceive. Without God, there is coarsening of the society. And without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure. If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under.

Have we thanked the Lord for what we DO have? Have we asked HIM to move in this situation, or are we simply waiting for an imperfect government to set everything right?

Let’s not panic. Let’s not get so pre-occupied with this that we forget to look to the One who is wisdom and who alone can help us understand and know what we need to do. Let’s not lose sight of what is truly important. Let’s not forget to seek God through prayer and, just as importantly, let’s not forget to support and encourage one another; for it is only by connecting with God and with each other that we will be able to stand through this.

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. Psalm 56:3

“Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided itself will not stand.” Matthew 12:25
