Fading to Flourishing

A dear friend of mine was married in Savannah last weekend. Her wedding was like a “family” reunion—all of our best friends packed in one room. It was great.

I was one of many who brought home a few plants that were part of the reception decor (I probably shouldn’t have taken any as I haven’t been able to figure out how to keep any of our house plants alive). Yesterday, as I was cleaning the house I noticed that one of the plants was already dying (apparently it needed more water than I realized). I thought it might be too late, but decided to give it a bit of water… just in case. To my surprise it was flourishing again within an hour! Amazing. Just a little bit of water revived that dying plant.

The situation reminded me of how I felt after that wonderful “wedding weekend” spent with people I love so dearly. Revived. Alive. Strengthened. Encouraged.

Life cannot sustain itself without some sort of fuel. Plants, animals, people . . . every living thing cannot survive without “help” (food, water, etc.). And a person needs more than just natural food, water, and exercise. To flourish, we need spiritual sustenance as well. A drooping plant is like a drooping life—outwardly it may appear to be fading, but if it gets what it needs in time, it can flourish again. Sometimes a cup of “cool water” is all a person needs in order for their spirit to revive so they can function as they were created to function.

I am thankful for the “water” I received last weekend. The encouragement, the love, the reminder that we are all in “this” together. I feel revived.

Look around. See any “drooping” plants? Don’t give up on them. Water them.

Peace,

Stephanie
